About Music Therapy

Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.

  • Treatment Modality: Music Therapy is a research based, allied health profession. It is the systematic use of music to address: behavioral, social, psychological, communicative, physical, sensory motor, and/or cognitive functioning. MDS Music Therapists complete a music therapy assessment upon initiation of services. Goals and objectives are developed based on the individual's assessment. Sessions are conducted to address the identified goals. An ongoing evaluation of the goals and objectives is completed by the music therapist on a quarterly basis. In addition, the music therapist maintains an active role in the individual's interdisciplinary team.

  • Population Served: Individuals of all ages and abilities including by not limited to: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Down Syndrome, Intellectual Disabilities, and Behavior Disorders

  • Setting for Services: We offer site based, community, and home-based services across Indiana (see map)

  • Hours of Service: There are no standard hours for Music Therapy Services. Services are typically scheduled to meet the needs of the individual. Evening and weekend hours are limited.

  • Days of Service: Services are typically provided Monday-Friday. Weekend services are limited.

  • Frequency of Service: Frequency of service is based on the individual's assessed needs, availability, and funding. Individuals are typically seen weekly for Music Therapy.

  • Credentialing of Staff: Music Therapists with MDS have completed a minimum of a bachelor's degree in music therapy, a 6 month internship under the direction of a music therapist, and have attained Board Certification from the Certification Board for Music Therapists http://www.cbmt.org/

  • Payer Sources: MDS is an approved provider of music therapy under the Family Support Waiver and the Community Integration and Habilitation Waiver. In addition, we offer services on a private pay basis.

  • Fees: There is no direct cost to individuals when services are reimbursed through the FS or CIH Waivers. Private pay rates are available.

  • Referral Sources: We received referrals from families, individuals, case managers, and other team members. We are available to answer any questions you may have about music therapy.
